Excessive amounts of flattened or elongated ballast in a track can cause the ballast to deteriorate and have an unequal settlement. To prevent this ballast shape is evaluated based on the flatness ratio and elongation ratio. The flatness and elongation ratio can be found accurately and fast when using the Ballast Flatness and Elongation Ratio Gauges.
Both gauges have 4 openings of varying sizes to determine the flatness or elongation of ballast retained on 1 of 4 corresponding sieve sizes. The 4 sieve sizes are 2.12 in, 1 ½ in, 1 ¼ in, and ¾ in with the largest gauge opening corresponding to the largest sieve size. Opening sizes are designed to match those described in the Ballast test methods of Tokaido Shinkansen. Both gauges are easy to use and feature durable steel construction.
HM-725 Flatness Ratio Gauge allows for swift and reliable calculations of the flatness ratio of ballast. Ballast specimens are tested against the opening in the gauge that corresponds to the sieve that the specimen was retained. The shortest side length of the specimen is examined to identify that it passes the gauge’s openings. The ratio is determined by taking the weight of the ballast that passes the proper gauge openings and dividing it by the original ballast weight.
HM-726 Elongation Ratio Gauge helps calculate the elongation ratio of ballast with quick and dependable results. Samples of ballast are examined against the gauge opening that matches with the sieve where the sample was retained. The longest side length of the ballast sample is tested to determine if it does not pass the opening of the gauge. The total weight of the ballast sample that does not pass the openings of the gauge is then divided by the total original weight of the sample to determine the elongation ratio.
