Draindown Basket test for uncompacted bituminous mixes effectively measures the amount of asphalt binder that separates from a sample held at elevated temperatures encountered in production, transport, and placement. The test is ideal for Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) or open-graded porous asphalt mixtures.
A sample is placed in the basket in a forced-air oven on a pre-weighed paper plate for one hour. The amount of draindown is measured as that portion that separates itself from the sample and is deposited onto the plate outside the basket.
The basket is constructed of quality ASTM E11 stainless steel mesh. Each measure 4.25x5.5in (108x140mm) dia.xH and has a 1in (25mm) bottom skirt with a convenient bail-type handle.
HM-56 is constructed of 1/4in (6.3mm) ASTM E11 stainless steel mesh.
HM-56A is constructed of No.8 (2.36mm) ASTM E11 stainless steel mesh.
HM-56B is constructed of No.16 (1.18mm) ASTM E11 stainless steel mesh.
