ASTM/AASHTO Constant Head Permeameters use the constant head method for the laminar flow of water through granular soils to determine the coefficient of permeability. Models HM-831 to HM-835 come in sizes ranging from 2.5–9.0in (63.5–228.6mm) diameter to accommodate granular soil permeability testing of a wide range of particle top sizes. The permeameter’s clear acrylic sample chamber allows for easy viewing during testing.
The Permeameters have two sidewall manometer ports covered with No.100 (150µm) stainless steel mesh to deter material into the manometer. A compression spring attached on the top cap to apply 5–10lbs (2.3–4.5kgs) force against the top porous stone or perforated plate to prevent soil density changes while running tests. Tubing is included, plus anodized aluminum end caps with valves and ports for vacuum and water sources. The 6.0 and 9.0 models include porous plates for use on top and bottom of the specimens. Smaller sizes include porous stones.
A manometer, sold separately, is a required accessory for an ASTM/AASHTO compliant permeameter. Gilson offers the HMA-838 Free-Standing Manometer or the HMA-839 Wall-Mounted Manometer
